  • There are around 300,000 different plant species and the number is growing all the time.

  • Around 2000 different types of plants are used by humans to make food.

  • Some plants are carnivores.  They have adapted clever ways to trap and break down insects for food.

  • Bamboo is the fastest growing plant.  It can grow up to 91cm each day.

  • An average size tree can provide enough wood to make 170,100 pencils.

Fun facts...

  • A mother hen will sit on her eggs for about 20 days keeping them warm and turning them regularly.

  • Hens are really good mums.  They teach their chicks how to eat and drink and call them under their wings if danger is near.

  • A young frog is only about the size of a human fingernail.

  • Caterpillars are like tiny eating machines.  They spend two whole weeks just munching through leaves.

  • Some moths have no mouths.  They cannot eat and do all their eating while they are caterpillars.

  • Get growing!  What can you grow in your garden or back yard?  A sunflower?  Some herbs? ​

  • Visit the park with an adult, take some paper and a pencil with you and draw the plants and animals you can see.​​

  • While you're at the park, go leaf or mini-beast spotting with these downloadable worksheets.  How many will you spot? 

  • Create finger puppets or stick puppets of the characters in Jack and the Beanstalk and create your own play of the story.
