Fascinating facts...

  • Historians believe electricity was first discovered by a mathematician called Thales of Miletus in 600BC. He is said to have realised that polishing a piece of amber with wool created a static charge.

  • In 1887, wind turbines are used to produce electricity for the first time.

  • In 1600, a scientist coined the word ‘electricity’ from the Greek word for amber: elektron.

  • Voltage is the amount of push that moves the electrons in a circuit.

  • Once they are in motion wind turbine blades can turn at speeds of between 45 and 180mph.  That’s about as fast as a Formula 1 racing car!

  • The main sources of renewable energy are solar, wind power, hydro and geothermal.

Do...

  • Create your own project based on the Railway Children.

  • Railways can be dangerous places, create a safety campaign about railway safety.  It could include posters, leaflets and videos!

  • Where could you go?  Brierfield train station is on the Colne to Preston and Blackpool South line.  Use the Northern Rail website to explore where the train from Brierfield could take you.  Perhaps you could ask an adult to take you on a trip on the train.
