Fascinating facts...

  • World War 1 began on July 28th, 1914.  The conflict lasted four years, three months and 14 days, ending on November 11, 1918.

  • The war began because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

  • There were two sides in the war. The Triple Ententes (also known as The Allies) were Britain, France, Ireland and Russia. The Central Powers were Germany and Austria-Hungary.

  • The tank was a major invention in the war, and from 1917 onwards, it was used in almost all British and French operations.

  • The Western Front stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss border and was made up of a continuous line of trenches.

  • Hundreds of thousands of women worked in munitions (weapons) factories, performing dangerous tasks such as filling shells with explosives.
